Artisans Selling With Handmade at Amazon
Handmade is an online store on Amazon for artisans to sell their unique, handcrafted goods reaching hundreds of millions of customers worldwide.
Amazon Handmade went live in North America in 2015, later opening in the European Union in 2016 and Canada and Mexico at the end of 2017. All products available on Handmade at Amazon store must be made entirely by hand, hand-altered, or hand assembled (not from a kit).
Products must be handmade by the artisan, by one of the employees, if the company has 20 or fewer employees, or a member of collective with less than 100 people. Mass-produced products or products handmade by a different artisan are not eligible to sell in Handmade.
For example, an artisan in Houston, Texas finds online customers via Amazon Handmade. In 2007, John Leslie invested in a $20,000 laser cutter to produce wooden jewelry out of his Houston garage. He crafts about 40 to 50 items and ships them to an Amazon warehouse. Customers can then purchase them online with the Prime two-day delivery option.
Last year he raked in $125,000 in sales. He is currently 25 percent ahead of where he was sales-wise at the same time last year. And he’s on his third laser cutter.
