U.S. Consumer Confidence Jumps to Highest Level Since 2001 – Bloomberg News
Consumer confidence climbed in December to the highest level since August 2001 as Americans were more upbeat about the outlook than at any time in the last 13 years, according to a report Tuesday from the New York-based Conference Board. “The post-election surge in optimism for the economy, jobs and income prospects, as well as for stock prices which reached a 13-year high, was most pronounced among older consumers,” Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, said in a statement.

A Founder of Odwalla Tries to Recapture His Mojo – New York Times
Greg Steltenpohl started the juice company Odwalla in 1980, selling drinks out of his band’s Volkswagen van in and around San Francisco. Within a few years, the company was a multimillion-dollar business, flying high as one of the first breakout healthy drinks now commonplace in grocery aisles. Then, in 1996, a child died and dozens were sickened because of contaminated apple juice produced by Odwalla, changing everything. About 90 percent of the company’s revenue evaporated almost overnight in the wake of the outbreak. With the company on the brink of bankruptcy, Mr. Steltenpohl and his partners were forced to sell a controlling interest in Odwalla to private equity firms. Not long after, the company was sold to Coca-Cola. “Odwalla took him to the top of the world and then to the bottom,” said Berne Evans, his business partner today. “I don’t think he’s ever gotten over it.”

New Risks Affecting the Global Economy – Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas
Events in the last month and a half such as the U.S. presidential election result, the rejection of the Italian referendum and India’s currency reform have increased uncertainty in the global outlook. Additionally, the impact of “Brexit” still remains uncertain because final separation agreements between the U.K. and its European trading partners have yet to be formulated. Most recent data do not yet reflect the latest global events, with the outlook for global growth (excluding the U.S.) little changed since the November Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

Will Latin America Finally Embrace Markets? – Mies Institute
Much talk has been made lately about the Left’s recent defeats in countries throughout Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela most notably. These countries have been characterized by Leftist governments that had the luxury of exploiting commodity prices during the early-to-mid 2000s to finance their profligate social programs.

U.S. Population Growth Slow But Rising in the Sun Belt – Brookings Institution
Rising death rates combined with falling birth and immigration rates in 2016 produced the smallest annual growth in the American population in 80 years.
